Thoughts on the Mississippi State Game

Image
Great game by the Wildcats yesterday beating Mississippi State, ranked number 23 in the Coaches poll, 31-24.  Here's a recap of all the articles about the game that I found: K-State upsets Mississippi State 31-24 for first signature win under Chris Klieman. Malik Knowles’ kickoff return, Skylar Thompson’s TD pass propel K-State Kansas State sits 2 defensive starters in win over Mississippi State Read more here: https://www.kansas.com/sports/college/big-12/kansas-state/article235096517.html#storylink=cpy Playing 'less scared' than years past, Kansas State overcomes multiple errors to beat Mississippi State DANKE SCHOEN Kansas State escapes with 31-24 road victory against Mississippi State I was expecting this one to be close since Vegas put a seven to nine point spread on the game depending on when you looked during the week.  And it was close throughout. The stats kind of favored Mississippi State in this one.  Mississippi State out-gained K-State 352-269

10 Facts About Mississippi State

Image
K-State football plays Mississippi State at 11:00 AM Saturday, September 14th on ESPN.  Here are 10 fun facts about Mississippi State to get K-State fans ready for the game. 1)  Mississippi State beat K-State 31-10 last season in Manhattan.  Saturday is the return game in Starkville. 2)  Mississippi State plays in the SEC and is 2-0 so far in 2019, beating Louisiana Lafayette and Southern Mississippi. 3)  Mississippi State has won one SEC Championship, in 1941, and one division championship, in 1998. 4)  Mississippi State plays in Davis Wade stadium, which has a capacity of 61,337. 5)  Mississippi State has an all-time losing record against every SEC team except Texas A&M and Vanderbilt.  They are tied against Kentucky with a 23-23 all-time record against them. 6)  The most resounding tradition of Mississippi State is the cowbell.  The precise origin of the cowbell as a fixture of Mississippi State sports tradition remains unclear to this day. The best records hav

Big 12 Coaches Conference Call 9/9/2019

Image
I listened to the Big 12 coaches conference call today and here's my take...KU made an awful hire in Les Miles. Miles was stuttering and stammering around when answering questions. He didn't understand one of the questions, had to have another guy repeat his question and was asked about rule changes and couldn't even answer the question. Klieman came on after him and answers every question directly and to the point and is a thousand times more well spoken than Miles. I thought Miles would be a good hire for them but my opinion has changed and quickly. I'm not sure what is wrong with Miles, but something is not right there.  I'm not complaining, just stating an opinion.

Thoughts on the Bowling Green Game

Image
K-State beat Bowling Green 52-0 yesterday in what proved to be quite a mismatch.  Bowling Green has played K-State twice in their history and hasn't scored a point, also losing 58-0 in 1997.  Not sure they'll bother to schedule another match-up with the Cats anytime soon. K-State has gained over 500 yards of total offense in the first two games of the season for the first time in school history.  Personally, I think Chris Klieman wanted to make a statement in these first two games by going "all out" and giving the players some confidence.  Bill Snyder was notorious for not showing much of the offense or defense in the non-con games against inferior opponents. I think Klieman threw all caution to the wind.  Still, it's an impressive stat. I attended the game in person and I watched the broadcast of the game this morning.  K-State moved the ball at will on the ground and through the air.  They rushed for 333 yards and threw for 188.  Bowling Green rushed for

10 Fun Facts About Bowling Green

Image
K-State's next opponent is Bowling Green.  Here's 10 fun facts I found about the University and football program. 1)  Bowling Green's sports teams are named the Falcons.  Bowling Green's mascots are Freddie and Frieda Falcon.  I found an interesting write-up about the history of the school nickname .  They used to be called "The Normals" before it was "The Falcons." Until 1927, Bowling Green State University was referred to as Bowling Green Normal College, for its teacher training curriculum. The school's nickname was "The Normals." That year a man named Ivan "Doc" Lake, who was a distinguished 1923 graduate of the university, and active athletics booster, suggested that the university needed a new nickname. Doc Lake, then a sports reporter for the local Sentinel Tribune newspaper, had just finished reading an article about falconry. He suggested the university rename its nickname and mascot, "The Falcons.&quo

Nicholls State Game Thoughts

Image
K-State beat Nicholls State last night 49-14 in the first game of the Chris Klieman era.  It was a dominating performance.  K-State rushed for 361 yards and out-gained Nicholls 573 to 276 in total yards.  Here's a summary of the game stats from ESPN: I must admit I was not expecting such a dominating performance, even though Nicholls is an FCS program.  They are ranked in the FCS top 25, however, so they're not exactly a pushover.  I was  pleasantly surprised at how well Kansas State played.  I was expecting a victory, but was kind of shocked at how dominating it was.  In a week where KU barely survived against FCS Indiana State, Iowa State barely survived against FCS Northern Iowa, Wyoming beat Missouri and Georgia State beat Tennessee, it was nice to have an easy victory. I was very pumped up and excited yesterday, but today I am a bit more even keeled about what might happen the rest of the season.  It's just one game of 12 and there is a difficult schedule comi
